8. Summary of the Rules for e-speec
- The letters b, d, f, g, h, j, l, m, n, p, r, t, v, w and y retain their traditional uses.
- Short vowels a, e, i, o and u are spelt the same.
- Long vowels a, i, o and u are indicated by an 'e' on the end of the word - for example the sound of
'a' in 'mate' is long. But long 'e' is spelt 'ee'. When long ‘u’ is preceded by a ‘y’ sound it is spelt ‘yu’, as
in ‘byuty’ (beauty).
- At the end of a word, the letters i, o and u represent the long sounds. At the end of a word, long,
accented 'e' is spelt 'ee'; long 'a' is spelt 'ay'. Short, unaccented 'i' at the end of a word is spelt 'y'.
- The short, unstressed 'u' sound is spelt 'a', as in 'cola'. The short sound as in the second syllable of
'carrot' is spelt 'e' - giving carret.
- A consonant is doubled when the preceding vowel is short, and when the syllable is stressed - as in 'hurry'.
- The 'k' sound is spelt with a 'c', as in 'cat', 'cite' (kite).
- The 's' sound is spelt with an 's', as in 'cats', 'seeling' (ceiling).
- The 'z' sound is spelt with a 'z', as in 'zip', ‘treez’ (trees).
- The 'x' sound is spelt 'cs', as in 'acsent' (accent), 'bocs' (box).
- The sound 'ar' is spelt 'ar', as in 'far', 'farther' (father).
- The sound 'er' is spelt 'er' as in 'her', 'berd' (bird).
- The sound 'air' is spelt 'air', as in 'fair', 'bair' (bear, bare).
- Thew sound 'ou' is spelt 'ou', as in 'out', 'cou' (cow).
- The sound 'eer' is spelt 'eer', as in 'beer', 'heer' (hear, here).
- The sound 'oi' is spelt 'oi' as in 'boil', 'boi' (boy, buoy).
- The short sound 'oo' as in 'good' is spelt 'oo', as in 'cood' (could).
- The sound 'j' is spelt 'j' as in 'jug', buj (budge).
- The sounds 'w' and 'wh' are both spelt 'w', as in 'wize' (wise), 'wi' (why).
- The sound 'ch' is spelt 'ch', as in 'wich' (which, witch).
- The sound 'cw' is spelt 'cw', as in 'cween' (queen), 'cwire' (choir).
- The sound 'ng' is spelt 'ng', as in 'song', but when followed by a 'c' sound it is spelt 'n', as in 'minc' (mink).
- The ending traditionally spelt '-ful' is spelt '-fl', as in 'lustfl' (lustful).
- The ending traditionally spelt '-ous' is spelt '-us', as in 'deevius' (devious).
- The sound 'sh' is spelt 'sh', as in 'cash', 'rashn' (ration).
- The sound 'zh' is spelt 'zh', as in 'divizhn' (division).
- In cases where the preceding vowel is long (except for 'ee'), this fact is indicated by adding 'e' before a
final 'l' (as in 'bibel' (bible); and before the 'n' in the sounds 'shn' and 'zhn', as in 'nashen' (nation) and
'fyuzhen' (fusion).
- Letters that are not pronounced are not spelt - as in 'thum' (thumb), 'litl' (little).
