The sound 'er'

This sound is written traditionally using the letters 'er' (40% of words), 'ur' (30%), 'ir' (20%) and in other ways (10%). So in e-speec we use the spelling 'er' consistently, as in: later, merder (murder), wer (were), ster (stir), werc (work).

There are a few words where the letters 'er' represent the sounds 'e' and 'r' separately, for example: deride.

The sound 'or'

Traditionally this sound is written 'or' in 60% of words, 'aw' in 20% of words and in other ways in 20% of words. So e-speec uses 'or' consistently, as in: porc (pork), porn (pawn), dorter (daughter), corl (call), forlt (fault), deplor (deplore).
