This list shows the old spelling and the e-speec spelling for a selection of common words that are of interest. See the previous list (Chapter 18) for words that are spelt the same. (About 30% of all words are spelt the same traditionally and in e-speec).

e-speec writes -ing and -ly as in traditional spelling. But traditional -ed can be written -ed, -d, or -t depending on the sound; -ful is written -fl; -ness is written -nes; -able and -ible are written -abl; -tion, -sion etc. are written -shn or -zhn depending on the sound, or -shen or -zhen if an 'e' is needed to show that the preceding vowel is long; -ous is written -us. And plurals (and third person present tense of verbs) use s or z depending on the sound. For example: running, hating, badly, lately, hated, senst (sensed), orfl (aweful), bignes (bigness), muvabl (movable), atenshn (attention), tenshn (tension), ocazhen (occasion), wundrus (wondrous), cats, treez (trees), dayz (days).
(a) = ‘adjective’; (n) = ‘noun’; (v) = ‘verb’.
